I've been told people do this. It breaks my brain. The button literally says 'favourite'. How can everything you read be your favourite?

Keep in my mind that every time you hit this button you're sending the author a notification. I don't really want to be notified every time someone has merely read one of my posts. Do you?

Is there maybe another way fediverse apps could serve the purpose this serves for you?

I think that's one of the reasons for the new "Emoji reaction" posts. You could just react with 😐

True, but I don't think that would help people track which posts they have and haven't read. Which I presume is the goal of using Favorite for 'mark as read'? @dgar?=

Ironically I favourited this and then felt the need to let you know that's a "hard agree". But now you have another notification for a message that could have just been a favourite so worst of both worlds! Arrgh! Sorry.

Also I think you can turn notifications for likes off, or at least I only usually read actual responses, likes and boosts are in a different column for me.

@strypey @dgar Totally agree with you. Do these people also click the favorite button to "mark as read" a post they do not agree with? E.g. something that is exactly the opposite of their stance on some topic?

Keep in mind that many people whose posts you favourite will never see that, and again, notifications are sent every time you do it. Just something to be aware of.
