The last couple of weeks have been such a tornado of nonsense, I couldn't help myself.
So basically they're choosing between a sudden, chaotic market crash or slow, legally enforced economic stagnation that could lead to a crash.
@mttaggart this truly is a great piece - which finally puts into words what I am feeling about this since some time, but could not articulate in the same way. Thank you!
Even though the em-dash right in the beginning made me a bit nervous :)
@mttaggart Even better - everyone also smiles for money these days.
Once there was only one country to do so, and we all knew it. Positive change, or what?
@mttaggart "Here's the real risk: The money runs out. Prices explode. Data center contracts evaporate. The market tumbles. The economy craters."
is it a risk at this point ? i recognize i may be insane but to me it sounds like part of the plan. that's the end goal. because when the economy collapses - they benefit, and we pay. that's how it's always been.
@mttaggart Thank you. It’s nothing more than a digital assistant great at pattern recognition. Whether boiling down humanities prior works or understanding the users request. We’re not as complex as we’d like to think
@mttaggart excellent summary
@mttaggart what to do about this? https://taggart-tech.com/control/
buying more hardware?
supporting open hardware dev?
- Stop using commercial software wherever possible
- Use local services wherever possible
- Buy repairable hardware
- Learn how to repair/replace parts
None of these are easy, and some extraordinarily hard. It will take a community effort.
My basic supposition is that we have to let this thing collapse under its own weight and rebuild afterward, so the job right now is to preserve the light of knowledge until the storm is over.
Sweet jebus, I swear tf, *thank you* for this (and h/t to @zackwhittaker for sharing)
@mttaggart The #FossilFuels #Oligarchy is deeply entrenched, and the #TechBros have a lot of Hollywood level scripting to do in order to corner the energy markets.
Yay #Capitalism!
@AAKL The media is more than happy to generate the buzzy headlines for them. No, what will punch them in the face is defaulting on loans—and in some cases, bond issuance. When the data center builds are revealed to be money holes instead of money printers, this all goes up in smoke.
@mttaggart great summary
@mttaggart excellent read. I just wanna add something that even the call for the government to regulate them is another attempt at getting money - taxpayer money in this case, and also choking out the competition.
I also wanna state that AI capability of remediating misuse, abuse, and preventing attacks is so bad, that I've seen not one, not two, but at least three different job listings for the different AI companies offering obscene amounts of money to deal with those subjects at some of the big names.
On top of that, there have been at least two different places now that tried to recruit me for some kind of a job answering cybersecurity related questions for the AI in order to train their models for them. and of course, they're offering peanuts for the onerous task of digitizing the knowledge I've spent over a decade acquiring.
@mttaggart You have a typo in the first word of the title. “Everone”, missing the “y”.
@mttaggart FYI the purple colour of your links makes them unreadable on a dark background on a small screen.
@brunogirin Thanks, I'll look into it
@mttaggart If we go full 1929, and they start burning corn while people starve, I think I won't be able to do another capitalism.
