Sometimes called the Sputnik Gall Wasp, the cynipid Wasp,Diplolepis nervosa, causes spiked galls. Four are sen here on the underside of a green Dogrose leaf in our native hedging. The galls are of different colours ranging from small, bright greeny-yellow to larger brown, well formed spikey spheres. Each gall is a hollow, fleshy nursery chamber for a small white grub, the larva of the Diplolepis nervosa gall wasp, which feeds on the chamber wall. The galls detach from the leaves before leaf fall and will lie in the leaf litter until the grub pupates and emerges as the small adult wasp, only about 4 mm long in the springtime.
