One thing that really annoys me about the way the media explains the rise of the populist right around the world is the idea that they're somehow more authentic... That politicians and people in general have a "real self" hidden inside that they may reveal to the public. Pauline Hanson and Trump might be more willing to say what they think and express controversial opinions than centrists, but that doesn't make them more "real". In the end like all humans, they are just organisms reacting to their environment. There's no beautiful soul hidden away inside, waiting to shine through.
