Yes, Nina was both a genius and a narcissist and a victim of horrible racism. I dont think I would have wanted to spend much time with her at all, but I'll listen to her recordings plenty.
If I get to do an interview though, I'd rather interview Ella, or Alice Coltrane.
@dlakelan No fair. No one would choose not to do Ella, the greatest vocalist of the 20th century. I don't think even *Nina* would choose not to interview Ella.
There is no Ella but Ella.
Remember, when you hear a Nina take, you are hearing a *live* take. That is her voice, and that is her piano, and she's not multi-tracked and produced. She's singing that and playing that.
Nina Simone spent her entire life telling everyone around her that she was a genius.
We've all known folks like that.
But the trouble is, in her case, that, in fact, she was a motherfucking genius.
