My family enjoys a fairly reliable municipal water supply, but I would like to be more resilient in this area. Buying pallets of plastic bottles sounds awful. Does anyone have experience or insight around the installation of a (continually flushed, inline) tank for potable water?

Almost everyone in the USA has experience with that. It's called a "water heater." Works good.
