"At 19, I was the first Indigenous person to exclusively interview António Guterres and I imagined what it would be like to take him to my territory in Terra do Meio, where collapse is already evident in extreme drought, thirsty rivers, and the pain of visible and invisible people" - Wajã Xipai, Xingu River, Altamira, the Amazon

Water is life 💦
What does that mean on an age of AI data centers and elite capture of our most basic necessities? I spoke with community organizer, Daniella Sherrill, about water sovereignty in Arizona’s communities.
A great listen if you’re looking for something hopeful amidst the MAGA news!

Amazon chose not to include all the ways its data centres use water because it didn’t want to negatively impact its reputation.
Amazon as a whole (including data centres) consumed 105bn gallons of water in total in 2021, as much as 958,000 US households, which would supply a city bigger than San Francisco. Those numbers are likely higher now.
At the same time, the company debuted a new ad campaign in November 2022 called “Water Positive,” (which is still running) with a promise to “return more water than it uses” by 2030. The company argues it should receive credits for water “offsets” or other projects that provide benefits elsewhere (think carbon credits).
The company continues to keep its current overall water consumption confidential.

No region of the world is on track to meet the UN Sustainable Development Goal of universal access to safe water and sanitation by 2030.
Don't take your #water for granted.

🪲💧 Ripple #bugs live their entire lives on the surface of streams, pivoting in less than the blink of an eye while stirring the #water beneath them into swirling vortices.
#Biomechanics researcher Víctor Ortega-Jiménez spent five years figuring out their secret: feather-like oars on their middle legs that deploy and collapse in just 10 milliseconds. Engineers are now building small #robots that mimic these water-skating abilities.
