Yes, tricky challenges.
Having this supported in browser space might greatly help, but if it happens at all it would come with its own huge problems. We have a highly unhealhty browser oligopoly, and such native support - if it would be just that - would see corporate capture and takeover of fedi space, and the values and culture we hold dear being lost.
And don't forget the mobile duopoly where Apple and Google reign.
New technology trends exist, like #LocalFirst, #P2P (renewed uptake), and #WebAssembly, that could lead to technological paradigm shifts where both the browser hegemony and cloud dominance can be broken. We might come to hybrid decentralization (federated + P2P), having self-sovereign clients in control of their data, interacting over the social graph of the Prosocial web (of apps and services).
