hey californians, SB 868 passed the legislature (but is waiting on Gavin’s signature). If signed, on Jan 1 2027 it will be fully legal to add plug-in solar to your apartment without a bunch of additional paperwork.
Plug in solar systems are small (<1.5 kW) portable systems similar to those you might have for camping. When these systems are plugged into your wall outlet, they **reduce** the net load on you home’s circuit, reducing the amount of money you have to give to a corporation which has been found guilty of 84 counts of manslaughter.
For the most part, these systems don’t 100% eliminate your electrical bill and they cannot power your home during a blackout, but they help reduce costs a good deal.
There’s a nonprofit here in the east bay, Bright Saver, which builds and sells small plug-in systems at-cost. Their 360W systems are about $400, which is is a good deal lower than the normal $3/watt from installed solar
