Today is the 60th anniversary of #StarTrek, a show that has loomed large in my life. It was the thing my dad and I had in common when we were trying to find a relationship after he and my mom divorced. I can still remember lying on the floor of his crappy first post-divorce apartment as his tiny black-and-white TV showed us the episode Metamorphosis. Whatever Trek means to you, that's one of the things it will always mean to me.
Also, DS9 is the best Trek. (Fight me. ;-)
@lauren @marsroverdriver There are a couple that suck. Usually written by Gene. I won a steak dinner because the ability to separate the saucer section from the engineering hull was actually mentioned in the series.
Not that I'm a nerd or anything. ;)
@lauren BTW, have you ever seen "Free Enterprise?" If not, it's a terrific low-budget movie about fans of the show. And you get to hear William Shatner rap Shakespeare.
@lauren Well, the way my memory is going, I'll have the pleasure of watching TOS all over again for the "first" time before I know it. ;-)
TOS will always have a special place in my heart and not just for nostalgic reasons; it's legitimately a great show. It's a strong second place in my own personal pantheon.
The TOS *movies* are also great -- half of them, anyway. I'll never be able to unsee Harlan Ellison's reference to the first one as "Star Trek: The Motionless Picture," though. :-D
@marsroverdriver The first one of course (ST:TMP) is the one I worked on. I've always considered it the worst of the film versions, but I do get people telling me they loved it, so different strokes for different folks ... I'm probably skewed by knowing what a mess the actual production was. I shiver just thinking about it. I've told the story of how I'm sort of responsible for the stupid round data screens on the Enterprise, because I didn't get my argument against them in early enough. But that's another story ...
They knew they were canceled and were phoning it in for that last one.
Except Shatner. He really put on a show playing his Dr. Lester-possessed self.

Also... it's extremely pervasive for people to call the "transporter" a "teleporter".
Whereas, in Doctor Who, the same tech is called a "transmat" for some reason (I know it's short for "matter transmitter" or maybe "transmit matter"..? But still, it's an odd term to standardize on).
@TerryHancock @marsroverdriver Actually, in "Where No Man Has Gone Before" Scott used the term "materializer" instead of transporter! Either way, it's a murder machine.

@marsroverdriver Only once in a lifetime does one get the experience of watching shows like that for the first time. During the original airing of the original series, we had a Star Trek club at my Junior High. (Why did I keep getting accused of thinking like Spock?)
There was a lot of media confusion in the early days. He often got called "Dr. Spock" because his name would be conflated with the actual "Dr. Benjamin Spock" who was a famous child development expert at the time.
Personally I like TOS best. Granted, "Turnabout Intruder" really sucks.
