Before the 1960s or so, they were made from wax or aluminium, not vinyl...
@dheadshot Vinyl records were introduced in the late 1940s and over the next 10 years or so replaced the earlier shellac records (a resin secretion from an insect).
Aluminum discs exist, but as far as I understand it those were for like one-off recordings for archival purposes (not for commercial sale).
The wax cylinders are more of a pre 1910 thing.
@thomasfuchs @dheadshot wax and aluminium discs (covered with acetate plastic) did exist, but the first were (and still are) used to generate the masters for both shellac and vinyl gramophone records by an electroplating process rather than direct replay, and the aluminium ones were as you mention used for one-off recordings such as in radio stations before magnetic tape was widely available and in reggae soundsystem culture and the rave scene for DJ's "dub plates".
There has always been a colloquial reference to all gramophone records as "wax" due to the mastering process..
In my old region there was a jungle/drum and bass producer called the Wax Doctor, who published on a label from the Record Basement in Reading, SE England and the parent company was known as Vinyl distribution 😁
@dheadshot you mean cylinder records? haven’t hear them called wax records, only cylinder records and wax cylinders :)

No, I still meant the flat ones: most 78s were made of wax...
@thomasfuchs I think it was an attempt to group music CDs and vinyl records together.
