Before the 1960s or so, they were made from wax or aluminium, not vinyl...
@dheadshot Vinyl records were introduced in the late 1940s and over the next 10 years or so replaced the earlier shellac records (a resin secretion from an insect).
Aluminum discs exist, but as far as I understand it those were for like one-off recordings for archival purposes (not for commercial sale).
The wax cylinders are more of a pre 1910 thing.
@dheadshot you mean cylinder records? haven’t hear them called wax records, only cylinder records and wax cylinders :)

No, I still meant the flat ones: most 78s were made of wax...
@thomasfuchs I think it was an attempt to group music CDs and vinyl records together.
