#WritersCoffeeClub Sept. 6: If you work digitally, what keyboard or dictation do you use? If paper, what do you write with?
Learned to type on a manual typewriter, have used keyboards almost exclusively since then (1970s). Today my desktop uses a Keychron K5 low-profile mechanical keyboard with Gateron red keyswitches, but I also have a Macbook Air and a Macbook Neo for travel, along with a Pomera DM250, and a bunch of other proximate e-waste.
Dictation is utter shit for fiction: don't use it.
Sounds like you’ve got quite the setup; I can’t help but feel nostalgic for the clack of a typewriter.
@cstross I fondly remember my first typewriter, a (West) German Adler portable manual. I loved that thing. I write in a Moleskine journal, type on my laptop. No dictation. I am a text based entity.
@tinydoctor An Adler 25 was my *second* typewriter. (My first, an inherited Empire Aristocrat, died when the keys began snapping under my abuse.)
@cstross I also learned on a big, heavy manual typewriter. So I still put a lot of pressure on keys. I buy inexpensive keyboards that feel reasonable and just replace them as they fail. When I find a particularly good one I'll sometimes buy a few to have spares. No good reason to buy more expensive ones since I'll destroy those too.
@Enema_Cowboy @cstross I actually have a 2741 type terminal around somewhere. I think it has an APL keyboard but not an APL typing element.
@andygates @cstross I've recently started having some issues -- trigger thumb for example -- suggesting all this typing for so many years is finally catching up with me.
