A shot through a tunnel towards an island. Much of the tunnel is in darkness but some of the limestone blocks forming the inside of it can be seen. The outer edge of the portal is constructed of blocks of granite. The floor of the tunnel and the platform outside are made entirely of granite. Immediately beyond the tunnel lies the sea, which on this rather dull day is a pale steel blue. Some distance out is the dark shape of an island, with trees visible and the faint outline of buildings. To the left of the island is a promontory shrouded in mist. To the right there is a buoy and part of a moored ship is visible, with another headland and island beyond. The sky is an even paler blue than the sea. The tunnel is part of the Royal William Victualling Yard in Plymouth that provisioned HM ships from the 1820s to 1980s. The main access for boats lies on the opposite side of the Yard but this facility allowed for smaller boats. The tunnel faces Plymouth Sound and Drake's or St Nicholas' Island.
