'In and around Arnhem, again there will be many Airborne events in the coming weeks. For many people, it is a time to reflect on the Battle of Arnhem and the sacrifices made in the fight against Nazi Germany. At the same time, the presence of the Dutch armed forces imposes itself on everyone in various ways around the Airborne. It is distasteful and inappropriate to place the military deployment of 1944 against Nazi Germany in the same tradition as the deployment of the military today.
The enormous growth of the armed forces has major negative consequences, both near and far. Militarization here is a threat to the rest of the world, particularly in the Global South. Closer to home, the consequences are also significant. We have seen the large heath fires caused by military exercises. The Defence Readiness Act is on the way, which will soon mean that the military will no longer have to adhere to nature and safety regulations. This comes at the direct expense of our vulnerable, green living environment.
And then there are the cuts to healthcare, education, and social security to pay for the growth of the army. More armed forces make the world less safe. Care, attention to the vulnerable in society, solidarity with people living further away: that increases safety. Stop the war propaganda at Airborne!'
