In 2001 I took a gap year before university and spent the summer volunteering at a summer camp in Sweden for refugee children. It was lovely, we organised games and theatre productions for them and a big barbecue at the end and they had nice facilities to play in and with.
I was having lunch this week with a bunch of people mostly in their early twenties, and this came up and I was honestly devastated by how surprised they were by this, that a European country used to welcome refugees, acknowledge that they'd been through some terrible things and needed extra support as a result.
We've somehow gone very wrong somewhere haven't we
