@lumi what are the options? Motorola GrapheneOS and Fairphone something?
@gildilinie@beige.party grapheneos is painful to recommend. it surely is better than stock android and way better than ios but eh
i think our only real hope right now are systems like postmarketOS
@gildilinie@beige.party i would have a much better time shilling for gOS if they at least had some way to allow root for the user
doesn't even need to be via apps. it could just be root via adb
but some way for the user to take full control
gOS now has a power imbalance between the user and the devs...
why would one need root in the first place...?
@stilic@kitty.tel i don't think that even matters. this is a matter of making sure everyone has full control of a device they are supposed to own
@lumi @stilic what do you think "control" is?? this take would have been charmingly naive a whole calendar year ago but i don't know if you noticed linus torvalds is just a smarter and more patient form of bill gates, and the entire linux kernel and most of the "open source" """movement""" that we thought existed because corporations could be incentivized to self-regulate their own behavior if we simply engaged the fawn response hard enough was always getting ready for the eventual heel turn without us. we are now directly working against the literal NSA in every single line of code we write in protest.
talking about "root" (like "root" was EVER a fucking good idea, just because some fuckboys at bell labs thought it worked great for their fuckboy OS that was too expensive for anyone else to criticize it) in 2026 is at some point going to become so naive as to be plausibly an attempt to undermine any nascent movement to construct an OS that literally cannot be backdoored
