I deeply agree with this podcast, what Meta glasses do for the blind; but we must push forward our needs and interests. I mean: relying just in one company (THIS company) means that Meta makes us dependant on it. This theater already happened in 2015 when they created the AI-driven alt-texts on images, which have improved in time. Meta with glasses, like Apple with iPhone, has significantly changed the way we use our everyday equipment but we shouldn't "sit down" and compliment them, thanking them as they were our savers, because they aren't. They are for-profit companies. And, like they did cutting fact-checking and diversity-inclusion programs, they can one day, all of a sudden, destroy accessibility support. Use our private information to control us, and take advantage of us vulnerable people, to normalize mass surveillance. They talk about free speech, then they ban sexual health and reproductive matters, they ban anti-Israel and anti-trump speech; they allow algorithms to boost haters.
Should I register an account on their app and let my glasses input get examined by them?
My claim is another: Meta, if someone wants to use that aid, they have to. Without being stigmatized for this. But that must not be the only company on the market, producing smart glasses.
I'd like one which keeps information on device. Without sharing to cloud or stuff. Privacy and accessibility can work together.
