anyone know if i can migrate fedi software while keeping this domain name? i have a feeling existing instances would reject any messages from this domain using new software as the key pairs would be different

You have to copy the key, yes. And you can't change the key you're using for that domain, so don't lose it. The Fediverse is kind of broken in that respect.
@finn My understanding is that you can't reuse the full domain and switch software, but you should be able to pick a new subdomain and have it work.
