Happy Eyeballs Version 3: Better Connectivity Using Concurrency

Many communication protocols operating over the modern Internet use hostnames. These often resolve to multiple IP addresses, each of which may have different performance and connectivity characteristics. Since specific addresses or address families (IPv4 or IPv6) may be blocked, broken, or sub-optimal on a network, clients that attempt multiple connections in parallel have a chance of establishing a connection more quickly. This document defines the algorithm for "Happy Eyeballs", a technique for reducing user-visible delays on dual-stack hosts. This document updates the algorithm in RFC 8305.

Apart from being faster, Firefox 155 is also the only non-Chromium browser that supports uBlock Origin, as Google removed it entirely yesterday.

When a server's IPv4 path and protocol are working, but the server's IPv6 path and protocol are not working, a dual-stack client application experiences significant connection delay compared to an IPv4-only client. This is undesirable because it causes the dual- stack client to have a worse user experience. This document specifies requirements for algorithms that reduce this user-visible delay and provides an algorithm. [STANDARDS-TRACK]

@russss @cheeaun Yes, back in the early 2010’s when there was a lot of #IPv6 advocacy, there was a great bit of work around trying to get websites to run over IPv6. But there were challenges. For example, some sites would put up a AAAA record, but then not fully connect web servers. And so your browser would be waiting and waiting and waiting, and then eventually it will fall back to the IPv4 address. It was a terrible user experience.

So Happy Eyeballs was a way to try both.
