Also, hearing that Windows 98 startup sound for the first time in well over 20 years was sort of like a time travel experience, because it came with all the nice things computers did back then: 15 seconds pause after POST, the click of the floppy drive as the presence is checked before C-drive boots, all that. So pumping a virtual machine through a speaker just does not invoke that same feeling.
The other thing I find funny is my myth of a belief that older computers used more electricity. Absolutely not true. The Pentium I was a total-design-power of only 10 to 15 Watts. I looked inside the computer case and there's a heatsink on the CPU, but not a fan itself. There is a small fan attached to the back I/O plate, and the SU has a fan in it as well if things get toasty, but overall these machines probably draw 60 to 80 Watts max whereas most machines today will easily hit 300 to 700 if it's powerful.
