I've thus far tried to avoid naming names, because *especially* where nonprofits and small businesses are concerned, it feels kind of shitty calling out individual groups where people are trying their best.
But I'm going to call out that SIFF, as much as I adore them and am thankful for all the work they do, makes it very hard to follow what's coming up and when. Not to mention, their website is full of trackers.
If you volunteer at SIFF, especially on their website, I sincerely apologize; I know you're doing your best, and that this is a systemic problem.
But yeah, the SIFF calendar doesn't support RSS, iCalendar, or anything like that. I legitimately do not know how to find out what's coming up other than to make an account with Bluesky, a company that hates my fucking guts because I'm trans.
My absolute dream would be to have an iCalendar feed that aggregates all the cool local film venues, so I could better plan for and attend screenings. But I haven't found a single local theatre that even has an RSS feed, much less a calendar.
I get places have limited resources, and folks are doing their best; it just sucks that those limited resources are going into closed services like Instagram and Bluesky instead of making data available to the community to read and remix.
Anyway, all this is by way of example. In terms of what you can do, if you do work at a local business, or you do volunteer at a cool nonprofit, please ask folks to make data available to the community by publishing RSS feeds and iCalendar feeds and the like.
There's a better internet that is within our reach, and we've seen glances of what that looks like in the past. It's not gone, we can bring that forward into the present.
