In the 18th century, a Royal Navy captain, falling down the very steep stairs not quite a ladder on a ship, might be grabbed and saved by an ordinary seaman.

But.

A seaman making bodily contact with a captain, well, that was a capital offense. So the captain would simply ignore what happened.
