Got roped into helping an elderly neighbour pick plums off multiple trees. Definitely didn't have time to do that, but it was really nice chatting with her, she let me pat her hairless cat (!!) and now I have probably 50 pounds of really tasty plums that I need to figure out what to do with (a very good problem to have).
Have you considered using some for a Rumtopf? (Rum Pot) Delicious at Christmas with a little icecream. It is powerful though so only a little and not for children.
Clean and cut the fruit; layer with sugar and strong rum (55%). Use a ceramic container or keep in a dark place. Always make sure the fruit is submerged - use a saucer or plate. If and when you have other summer fruits (berries, stone fruits, apples, pears) add them when they are ripe with more rum and sugar.
@sundogplanets These plum dumplings are very nice. https://www.nosalty.hu/receptek/kategoria/edes-suti/szilvas-gomboc
@sundogplanets Oh, and wearing gloves while removing the stones will save you from having a weird feeling in your fingers and discoloured fingernails for days.
@sundogplanets That one's easy: you make powidl. Remove the stones and slowly cook them (the plums, not the stones obviously) at low temperature for multiple hours until they reach a chutney-like consistence. If you like that, add some cinnamon (before cooking, of course). Fill it into jars and eat it on toast, as a layer in cakes etc.
@sundogplanets Spiced plum chutney is a good use of several kilos.
@sundogplanets My oldest brother turned an old refrigerator into a fruit dryer for their yearly haul of plums. They're often sharing. 😎
@sundogplanets plum butter. Minimal ingredients, and can be canned or frozen.
@sundogplanets
We have two damson trees in the back yard. We've usually just cooked juice from them with a steam juicer.
It's very nice of you to help the elderly person to pick them off trees. The thing with these is that you can't just let them fall to the ground and rot, because then your lawn will be covered in sticky goo.
Last fall though we just gave them away for free because we're short of storage space for juice. Probably will do so this year too.
All these recipes! Recipes, recipes, and more recipes 😡
Is nobody else seeing the obvious - get a Tom Stanton hypersonic trebuchet, and start taking down those cluttering satellites with high velocity stone fruit.
@sundogplanets I suggest making brandy from that many plums.
@sundogplanets
Plum jam!! My wife made a batch yesterday and it is SOOO good on her home-made English muffins. Plum jam is what you want.
@sundogplanets eat some, freeze the rest untill you figure out what to do.
@SomeVeganCheeseIsOk I can't remember if I've already told you this, but every time I see your fediverse name it makes me giggle. Thank you.
@sundogplanets I recommend Pflaumenmus, German plum butter. One of the world's great preserves.
that's what pigs are for.
300 lbs of rutabaga? pigs
100 lbs of plums? pigs
trespassers? pigs
@coolcalmcollected Yeah, goats are definitely not as good at eating trespassers...
@sundogplanets I love german style plum cake. Can be made with frozen ones. Cut them into for pieces and remove the pit. Freeze them loosely on a sheet. Once froze you can bag them into ziplock bags.

@majeriisli wow that looks amazing!
@sundogplanets
Umeboshi is great but I don't think you can use ripe plums for that.
@sundogplanets plum-ginger jam! 😍
@sundogplanets donate to a food bank or soup kitchen?
@sundogplanets I suggest Spiced Plum Jam. So delicious!
Seriously, HALP I HAVE SO MANY PLUMS
@sundogplanets This looks like a plum assignment!
I'll see myself out.
@sundogplanets You could do plum flavoured spirits, e.g. vodka
@sundogplanets Various recipes here, amongst which plum cake and plum cobbler: https://www.marksandspencer.com/c/food-and-wine/cooking/recipes/plum-recipes/
Hmmmm "Plum Fruit Leather" now THAT would be grand!
@sundogplanets
If this will be a regular problem, I highly recommend investing in a plum stoner. So much easier than pitting with a knife, so much less plum-stained fingers.
omg... I would make all the things!!!They're gorgeous!
- wine or juice
- jam or jelly
- pickle
- baking
- animal treats
I think pretty much anything you could do with them would be fun.
@sundogplanets take them to a farmers market
@sundogplanets
Are you going plum loco? 😲
@sundogplanets Can you somehow turn them into alcohol? How hard is that to do? Just brainstorming, as I assume there's only so much jam and plum butter one can consume...
@sundogplanets we were just gifted a dozen plums and didn’t know what to do with them all, I can’t even imagine. Good luck!
@sundogplanets put em in a shared ice box and they’ll disappear
@sundogplanets wonderful problem
Cats expression: "What do you want me to do about it?"
@sundogplanets haha, if I had that problem I'd be making plum butter 💜
@sundogplanets If you stone & halve them they freeze well
So bag up & freeze portions for pies, crumbles or any other baked goods you may make in future
I believe you can make a decent home made wine with them but I've never tried that
