The software is not the thing. Code is the implementation language of a shared understanding. The shared understanding, between people with wants and needs living in the world, is the thing.
What is the point of a freely accessible knowledge commons where you can never be sure the knowledge is trustworthy or even real, where you can't drink the water or breathe the air.
@mhoye I fully agree, and I have been trying to convince my own community (computational science) about this for years, with little success.
In the eyes of most people, software is a tool made by experts for non-experts, much like a car or a refrigerator. I have no idea how to change this perception.
@khinsen Well, but that's a perception that is actually currently challenged by that vibe coding "no code" hype.
I don't know how to interpret the Debian Social Contract in a way that makes relentless global-scale information harvesting and stochastic regurgitation by for-profit companies acceptable.
LLM vendors are privatizing access to knowledge taken from the commons; selling access is not giving back. They hide an enormous number of massive ecological, financial, legal and ethical problems, their priorities are not users or free software, and their outputs do not meet free software standards.

At this point, I can only hope that the bubble pops before too much damage is done.
@suetanvil @mhoye oh, yeah. And the fascism bubble and the fossil fuel bubble and the patiarchy bubble.... A few decades ago I was wondering, whether we would be able to extract enough fossils to kill ourselves or whether we would run out just in time.... That one answered itsself a while ago.
But hoping is necessary i think.
