programming is art actually and I'm perplexed that this is apparently not a widely held position

I would compare it to writing fiction, you can write fiction in an adequate way to get a paycheck (see average pulp sci-fi) or you can get really weird with it. pour your whole soul into it. agonise over it for weeks. use it to work through some shit.
