Chapter 76 — Build 243
The shelf learned what to leave alone
What changed
Episode filtering is experimental in this build, and I definitely want your
feedback. Each podcast now has filtering options in Podcast Settings. Rules can
match an episode title with plain text or a wildcard pattern and can use a
minimum or maximum duration. Matching is case-insensitive unless you turn that
off.
Preview checks the newest 50 episodes even while Filter new episodes is off. If
you turn the switch on, future refreshes apply the rules automatically. When you
save an active filter, you can also apply it once to episodes already in your
Inbox or Queue. Filtered episodes stay in the podcast's library. Downloads,
played state, and listening position are preserved.
If keep-matching rules reject every new candidate in one refresh, Earshot saves
a warning in Podcast Settings. This is a safety check for feeds that change
their titles or stop supplying durations.
What to test
Open a podcast, choose Podcast Settings, then Episode Filters. Add title and
duration rules and compare Preview with the episode list. Try both filter
matching and keep matching. Preview should update before the main switch is on.
Turn Filter new episodes on, save, and choose whether to apply the rules to
existing episodes. Matching existing episodes should leave the Inbox or Queue
but remain in the podcast's episode list. Refresh afterward and confirm new
episodes follow the same rules. Also try a feed with short segments, where more
than ten items may arrive together.
Please send feedback from Settings. I especially want to know about a preview
that disagrees with the saved result, an episode that disappears from the
podcast library, an unexpected Queue change, a warning that is missing or
wrong, or any VoiceOver wording or delay that gets in your way.
Kashe opened the morning show and found six clips around the interview she
wanted. The clips were useful to somebody. They just were not useful to her.
She made one rule, listened through the preview, and saved it. The Inbox grew
quiet without pretending the other episodes had never existed.
Renata asked if she trusted it.
“It says experimental,” Kashe said. “So I am experimenting.”
