our originario ancestors were doing genetics experiments with all sorts of flora because from teosinte they got maíz, aka corn:
the word MAÍZ or MAIZE comes from what my Taíno ancestors called corn:

btw lots of autochthonous american words come from the Taíno language: barbecue, hurricane, maize; just to name a few.
So it's not just Brassica and bananas we modified into something that didn't exist before us; it's also most citrus.
Lemons - hybrid.
Grapefruit - hybrid.
Lime - hybrid.
Sweet oranges - hybrid.
We made the food to suit our taste.
