I think the reason roadkill fucks me up emotionally is that it's a gap in the wall I build between my everyday existence and survival vs my mental model of the ecological catastrophe that's going to dominate our lives for the foreseeable future. I have so much grief about all the animals driven to extinction, the animals fleeing from and dying in forest fires, suffering in heat waves, the mollusks whose shells are softened by rising ocean acidity. But if I let myself experience those feelings, I can't function. And if I don't function I'll be homeless.
I hate it here. And by here I don't mean the planet, I mean this fucked up capitalist system.
