In the West, people seem to only understand death as tragedy but in Nigeria where my parents are from, when people die of old age, after living a full and prosperous life, we celebrate them. Dolly’s death feels fully resolved to me. She got her flowers while she was still alive. She knew what she meant to the entire world. If you never listened to the Dolly Parton’s America podcast, you should. RIP to an icon. Her songwriting, her humor, her non-judgmental presence. What an angel. 🦋
