@siracusa I learned recently that “Ultra” was the name for the Allied code breaking operation at Bletchley Park where the first electronic computer was developed during WWII. There is something nice about Apple using the term Ultra for its best chips (and best laptop??), albeit surely coincidental. @siracusa Indeed. Studio Ultra with 96 GB of RAM and 2 TB hard drive on order myself. Finally moving on from Intel (goodbye, 27" 2020 iMac).

@siracusa True, but it's basically iMac Pro priced. And the M5 Max Studio with 2 TB and 64 GB of RAM… was not a ton cheaper.
At least, that's what I'm going to tell myself.
@siracusa Is this the first new machine with their ‘lease’ option?
Also historically you’ve always wanted ‘mac pro’ level machines for options and longevity… but stuff’s changed… you’re now forced into dongletown, stuff’s super fast, even external storage. Would leasing make sense now, and just upgrade every 36 months, or keep a $8k machine for 7+ years?
Now that I’m retired, my m1 ultra is still ‘just fine’.
@siracusa Baseline M5 ultra with 30-core CPU and 64-core GPU, 96GB of RAM, 8TB SSD = $8999. 16TB SSD would be 4000 bucks extra as would 256GB RAM.

To upgrade my M4 Mac Studio - which Apple insultingly values at just $1,660 - to the new model would cost $12k. Welcome to hell.
@siracusa Is it a Ferrari now? Is this where they're forcing you to pick the Accord?
@siracusa I have a M2 max with two TV storage. If I trade it into Apple, I can end up with the same as I have now but the M5 max chip and more ram for under $2500 plus tax.
Would you trade in your Mac Pro and if so, how much would Apple give you for it or would you keep the Mac Pro for gaming?

Would you share the monitor with the Mac Pro and the Mac studio. And if so, how? Does Apple provide a way of sharing the same monitor between two max? I can't do that with my studio display and I found only one KVM switch, which doesn't seem to work all of the time.
@paulc “Manual KVM” - Unplug cables from one Mac and plug them into another. If you find a KVM that works with a Pro Display XDR, let me know!
@siracusa I move my Thunderbolt cable between my MacStudio and my work MacBook. If I need to access my Mac studio during my workday, I will remote into it from the MacBook. If only Apple supplied an HDMI or display port port in addition to thunderbolt and added KVM to it..
I think the Sobran KVM is the only option for thunderbolt KVM at 5K and above. I've been reading about it for years and there were mixed reviews. It works well for some people, many have been very unhappy with it.
@siracusa I love my 2019 Mac Pro, but it’s not worth trading in. Or even selling, for what I’d get for it. It’s already obsolete :(
