If you think the Post Office Horizon scandal was bad…it’s really just the tip of the iceberg:
‘From the criminals’ point of view, #postoffice s are quick and easy places to launder dodgy money. “There’s no requirement for ID verification, there’s no requirement for any kind of enhanced screening, there’s no centralised CCTV,” said the second senior police officer. We put a higher bar on buying alcohol than we do on money laundering via the post office.’
It’s a ‘long read’ by definition…but it is genuinely worth your time getting your head around the mundane but industrial scale of money laundering that the lax Post Office systems enable.
It’s not the indivisible people who run individual Post Offices fault.
It is the perfect storm of banks closing, small genuine businesses struggling to survive layered with the complete lack of public trust about any sums reported by the Horizon system.
But the police and government can’t ignore it?
