Was trying to wrack my brains to think of a good 90’s film to watch as a family this evening.
Eventually we settled upon Titanic.
It’s not my favourite 90’s film - but I do think it’s got some good things going for it. It’s got romance, action and comedy rolled into one very long film that somehow never drags.
I can remember chuckling on the front row of a packed cinema when I first saw it with my partner. It still made me laugh tonight. The kids were entranced the entire time.
Now some may think it’s inappropriate to laugh given the tragedy of the subject matter…massive loss of life after ship hits iceberg on maiden voyage.
But no one watching the film, even for the first time, doesn’t have a rough idea how it’s going to end.
You know the ship will hit that iceberg and she will go down to the ocean floor.
But in-between there are so many opportunities for humour. DiCaprio did very well off the back of it. Winslet deserved to do better and was perfectly cast.
I"m not a film buff, but @JugglingWithEggs asks an interesting question. whatever happened to Kate Winslet?
After 1999, she looked set for megastardom. But it didn't happen.
Can anyone who knows this stuff explain why, to someone who last visited a cinema when Bertie Ahern was Taoiseach?
@2legged @JugglingWithEggs She starred in dozens of movies and TV shows since Titanic. She won an Oscar and was nominated for four more. I'm not sure what you mean by "whatever happened to Kate Winslet?"
That she didn't become an A-lister? Some people don't want to become A-listers.
Fai4 point, @David. Maybe she didn't want to be.
But in Titanic, I thought she acted better than Di Caprio. So I expected her career to diary higher, which was probably naive of me,
