Three forces colliding:
1) Some mystical "They" makes everything work and will keep doing so. Government doesn't matter, voting is just aesthetics.
2) If rich, must be smart and good at everything.
3) Deep human psychological resistance to "I was badly wrong, and people I don't like had a point."
