Why has YouTube added a direct messaging feature and exactly how many messaging services has Google released (and shut down) over the years?

Screenshot that says, "Say hello to direct messaging. Now you can send videos directly on YouTube". It also includes coloured d speech bubbles and an invite to chat link.
