Autistic characters are seldom seen on the big screen in Japan. Syoutarou Kobayasi's "Lives at Right Angles" is a heartfelt, insightful tale of an autistic man's unbreakable bond with his sister. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/culture/2026/08/23/film/lives-at-right-angles/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #culture #film #japanesefilm #syoutaroukobayasi #shotayasuda #non #autism #neurodiversity

@thejapantimes Last year I watched Akira Kurosawa's 1963 "High and Low," the inspiration for Spike Lee's Highest 2 Lowest.
There's a little throwaway scene where police are trying to place the location of a phone call based on the sound of a train in the background. One detective knows exactly whom to ask: a uniformed officer who is absolutely DELIGHTED to expound on the differences among sounds of the trains, and the reasons for the differences. Classic Autistic representation, 1963 Japan.
