Photo of a juvenile black-crowned night heron--which is neither black-crowned nor out at night, but rather a wonderfully streaky brown and white with red eyes and a skulky body currently bathed in sunlight. The stocky little heron--like a twitchy, adolescent football--is standing in left-facing profile on an iron railing of a local river dam and peering out through one diamond-shaped opening in a chain-link fence on which hangs a yellow metal sign that reads, "See and Say." The sign is technically a notice to dial 911 if you see something or someone suspicious at the dam, but just makes me think of the old pull-string fisher price animal sounds toy I had as a child.
