Memories stick around even after half the synapses are gone
Hibernation cuts down on synapses, but mice seem to retain memories anyway.

There was a time when it was thought memories were stored in engrams -- probably small pieces of proteins or other substances. There were experiments in planarian flatworms that demonstrated this phenomenon.
Certain memories form almost instantly, which seems faster than millions of synapses could be coordinated. But chemicals could be generated nearly instantly.
