I haven't thought this through at all, but ...
Imagine you could vote *against* a party. 'Anyone but the NZ Nazi Party', kind of thing. So instead of your party vote counting towards the % of a particular party, it would cancel out 1 party vote for whoever you vote against.
This would enable citizens who don't support electoral forms of democracy to still participate strategically, and have our views taken into account by the vote count. Without having to pretend to support an electoral party.
