In technical terms, the flag is an amalgamation of the Cross of Saint Andrew, the Cross of Saint Patrick, and the Cross of Saint George. None of that crosses Jack’s mind when he stumbles upon neo-Nazis marching with the flag in London in 1988, perhaps the only time in his travels he’s been truly frightened for his life. “There ain’t no black in the Union Jack,” the skinheads chant. Jack doesn’t stay to watch the Nazis. He turns the opposite direction and quickly walks away.
