Hey @TechConnectify I actually worked on HPWH as an R&D engineer(not AOSmith the competitor tho). Very cool to see what I worked on featured on one of my favorite YouTube channels.
I think you summed up pros and cons very well. I would add for those with "Volume anxiety" I would suggest getting a mixing valve. They can be set to like 120-130 and then you can set the actual tank to 140. This way you would create more available hot water for the cost of a little bit of efficiency.
@TechConnectify I didn't quite understand why you wanted an outlet to be on when the heat pump is running, but you know there are master-slave plugs for this, right? They are usually used for things like PCs so that your monitor and speakers would turn on when you power up your PC, but you can also just use them here
@TechConnectify I have one extremely important question, because I suspect you measured that as well: what is the exhaust air temperature of the heat pump?
attention everybody! @TechConnectify made a thing!
@TechConnectify the kettle thing again ... the auxiliary resistive heating on ours does ~2kW and that on a regular household socket ... Europe naturally.
PS: we can turn that on together with the heat pump in 'emergencies'
@TechConnectify your water heater actually heats the house. The same way as a fridge heats the house.
Waste heat.
The useful heat is moved from inside the house to somewhere else still inside the house.
And the waste heat from the power consumed by the compressor also stays inside the house.
To cool the house with the water heater you need to drain the hot bathtub so that the bath does not heat up the house again.
@TechConnectify there goes an hourx of my day!
@TechConnectify I watched the connextras part first 🤣
@TechConnectify That might actually be exactly what I need for my apartment in about two years.
I have a furnace with a water tank in my attic. So maybe I will be able to get outside Air through the existing holes in the Roof without changes to the building.
@TechConnectify It appears that our relationship has hit a boiling point /j
Cool vid, now recommending heat pump water heaters to the world
it's a what kinda pump now
@TechConnectify it's good to hear about things like these. Our water heater is pretty new, but when it dies, this seems like a good way to move another appliance off gas.
@TechConnectify I have REALLY been wanting to get one of these since my water heater is in the garage, and its west facing so it could use another heat pump.
(and in the winter I can air condition the neighborhood to heat my water)

Have you ever thought about publishing videos directly in the Fediverse on PeerTube? Maybe on https://makertube.net/
I'd be totally fine with some in-video advertising for that. We all need to make a living.
