Glad to see that Djangocon US has moved to the best conference format: Single track with an Unconference as a formalized hallway track. This is always what Write the Docs has done -- My only critique for Djangocon is they didn't match the Unconference times to the talk times, which is the best way to run the Unconference.
I really need to write up a blog post about why I love this format. I thought I already had.
The short version: Single track gives everyone a shared talk experience. No FOMO, and the ability to for speakers to reference other talks. The Unconference gives a formalized "escape hatch" for people who aren't interested in that specific talk. It naturally clusters the topics not related to the current talk in those slots, and provides an official way for people to find others who care about the same topics as them. It also keeps the content fresh, since Unconference is scheduled day-of.
