Let's suppose that tomorrow every data center and LLM service just stops working. It all freezes up. What is the damage?
I think some high-volume low quality content creators would be in some trouble. Some search engines and cloud software would need to be reverted. Some companies would need to rehire some customer service reps?
Who is hurting the most?
Go on convince me that it would be somehow economically more serious.
I do know of a company that tried to replace their customer service team of 8 people with AI. They thought they could get by with just 2 people if the AI processed most customer requests with human supervision. That was a year ago. They have since hired 4 people back and an AI coordinator.
Things are still not going well.
Same argument here. Basically, nobody has this thing performing mission-critical work yet. If it went away, everything would basically be fine. (Unlike, as Doctorow says, if Office 365 shut down tomorrow or John Deere tractors stopped working, in which case all hell would break loose.)

If the LLM system just stopped working I think they could adapt in a few weeks. And they'd be back to 8 people on the phones again.
@futurebird I bet you there's a load of manufacturing that would grind to a halt immediately because the factories' monitoring kit stops working.
Also quite a lot of transport (airlines and shipping and railways can't schedule anything, or monitor the locations of their vehicles).
Telecoms wouldn't be working much, either, I suspect.
@futurebird Plus any company that relies on cloud services or high volumes of teleconferencing is going to be having a bad day.
Oh, and the stock markets won't be functioning. But that won't matter so much, because broadcast media isn't going to be able to tell anyone. :)
Factory monitoring systems are using LLMs? That is terrifying. What would the benefit even be?
