The more I think about it the more I'm convinced that the only way to beat the AI craze (other than the big companies being on the way to financial self-destruction) is consumer protection laws similar to what's used to prevent gambling and addiction—for example, banning chatbots that refer to themselves with personal pronouns. We should also ban (or excessively tax) environmentally wasteful uses such as video generation. A third pillar would be forcing quotas of production for CPUs, GPUs, memory and storage as the high prices for these are not only becoming an economic problem but possibly one of national security.

@thomasfuchs I could not agree more. I think heavy regulation is the best solution we have now that the genie is out of the bottle. The only real self-regulation I could imagine could only come after a *massive* bubble pop, and only after significant societal and economic harm have happened. Getting rid of AI isn't going to happen, but I hope we can put the same energy into preventing harm as we have in developing the technology in the first place.
