Claudia! How many black women are there in the main cast of 1980s anime? (And I forget: why is her uniform coloured so differently than the others? Aside from she looks damn good in it?)

#Macross makes a big deal about Earth unification under the U.N. (and the violent opposition leading up to it). It's likely as a result of that we get some diversity of main characters. Captain Global and Roy Fokker also stand out so far.

A screenshot from the 1982 anime series, SDF Macross. Pilot Hikaru Ichijyo has rescued the young civilian woman Lynn Minmay, by capturing her from freefall and placing her into the plane cockpit.

A close-up of Minmay settled in the cockpit, fussing with her hair. She says, "Huh? Oh, no! My hair's a mess!"

Minmay listens while Hikaru says from off-screen, "Which is more important, your hair or your life?"

Minmay replies jokingly but kinda flippantly, "My hair, of course!"
