I am so old that I remember that Dragon Dictate did an acceptable job at speech recognition without needing „AI“ on a 386 machine with 4 MB, not 4 GB of RAM.
@jwildeboer I like to sketch the rate of progress in terms like: "because computers are one million times as powerful as back then, we can forecast the weather 10 days ahead instead of just 7".
@bthalpin @jwildeboer
I would be thrilled if we got an ACCURATE forecast even for tomorrow. I read that the climate crisis, and the speed at which it advances, has blown away all previous modelling and algorithms. At least the “kitchen window” forecast is still good for the next hour or two, which is better than what I am seeing online.
@Die_Mad @bthalpin @jwildeboer
Because the USA gutted much of its weather programs and took away the use of some satellites the world at large is working with fewer data points to make weather predictions.
Yes. Climate change, the crippling of ocean currents, and all of the rest has vastly altered how our models can predict things. But we also shot ourselves in the foot when we took funds away from NOAA.
It wasn't long ago when the 3 day forecast was fairly spot on. Now I don't even trust the forecast for tomorrow.
@Stuck_Here @Die_Mad @bthalpin @jwildeboer its no better in the uk, and we still have the Meteorological Office 😕
