Could you imagine if the future we got for kids and computing was One Laptop Per Child rather than computer prisons
@cwebber
in Poland govt donated one laptop per schoolchild. Couple years ago
@cwebber Do kids need laptops? I think the Raspberry Pi got it right from the Raspberry Pi 4 onward, plugged into a TV with HDMI instead of a games machine, like the BBC Micro Model B. The Pi 400 is simpler and faster. They come guile-ready.
@cwebber Agreed, and also everyone should read "The Charisma Machine" for why even that was not / would not be so great.
And I mean like the creative weird Smalltalk edition version, not the Negroponte scam continuation
@cwebber I remember working on the Sugar software back then. We were distributing it to run on any computer. It's still going. Looks like it's Python now.
@cwebber there were smalltalk focused laptops?
I installed squeak (?) recently and yeah that seems like a fun environment for learning. I mean, I understood nothing because I don't know the language but it has that vibe when you first learn to code and everything is modifiable and a toy haha
@sharkfie The OLPC XO-1 ran the Sugar desktop environment, which used Squeak, and had all sorts of things to teach kids to learn to code and extend their computer
@cwebber yeh I was gonna say 'didn't it end up being a pretty crappy build in the end?'
