I want a Firefox extension that knows how to replace every single "N months ago" label with the actual exact timestamp (using patterns for how the data is hidden in tooltips, click-to-expand, etc.).
That shit is SO unhelpful. Like if I'm looking back at git history, I don't care that a change was made roughly 3 months ago. I care whether it was made before or after an email I'm looking at that said something relevant to the change.
@dalias it gets worse with a cisco web interface I have been using - "1 year ago" actually means last year, which could only be 3 months ago 😡🤬😡🤬😡🤬
It seems Cisco is still shit at interfaces...

@dalias I think this is on my top-3 of aspects of modern UX design I despise the most.
@datarama@hachyderm.io @dalias@hachyderm.io Agreed. It also, I've noticed, has the side effect of making screenshots almost useless. "Oh, this was three months as of the time the picture was taken" which... great? yay? and when was the picture taken? Sure, maybe it's in the metadata... or not. What should I do, take a picture of the screen showing the program/browser with the "3 months ago" while holding today's newspaper?

Like seriously, I understand when this kinda user-hostile UX appears in capitalist shit where the designers are paid to copy Apple or whatever.
I do not understand why it gets copied into free software like Forgejo when it's widely known that users hate this behavior.

Otherwise I fully agree. At least there should be a quick way to flip al dates to exact.
@HaraldKi That is not something I "haven't figured out". It's a complete non-solution. I'm not going to sit there scrolling thru a long list of commits and click on the little vandalized timestamps one by one to fix them.
@dalias I feel like in general there's a sort of false humanism where designers try to make tools and interfaces feel more "natural", an inversion of "form follows function", so our tools are disguised and we can't tell how things work.
It's frustrating that in hard-won spaces where we have a little breathing space from capitalism, people think we should bring in the same design paradigms that capitalism uses to alienate and manipulate us and make us feel confused and helpless.
