The weirdest thing: suddenly these elements of aboriginal culture (e.g. song lines!) have sharp relevance to my work as a computer programmer. 😧 1st in terms of how I got here (Dreamtime) shown to me today in bizarrely intricate detail. And 2nd in the sacred character of the day-to-day work: something I thought I had abandoned as an engineer, but which somehow survived my neglect. Survived maybe because it was right in front of me the whole time? All this land imagery I work with and adore?
I honestly don’t know what to make of this. A reasoning part of me wants me to not go overboard. And also to be careful with other people’s culture.
But this can’t be ignored. That feels like it would be a real problem.
One thing that I ”knew” but didn’t really *know* until I saw it today: modern digital technology has its origins in weaving culture. It’s both a profound connection and just the outer doorway to deeper connections between modernity and these much, much older knowledge systems.
I’ve been trying to explain to my wife some of the shifts and discoveries that have occurred over the last few months developing this algorithm, and the metaphors I kept using were all from weaving.
