Travel through Central Edinburgh is still disrupted due to the fire on Princes Street a couple of weeks ago—the site is unstable and dangerously close to the tram route, so there are no trams running east of Haymarket and buses are re-routed. It's likely to remain problematic well into August as the gutted historic building facade needs to be made safe with structural reinforcements. Happy Festival Month, everyone! (lolsob)

@cstross I'm glad my film festival venues at the Filmhouse and Cameo are all in easy walking distance!
@cstross went through today, was slightly surprised that the whole of the street was closed off, including the pavement on the other side that's further away than the height of what's left of the building.
That said it was nice to walk through the Gardens.
@themself They're worried that vibration from passing trams or buses could bring down the building. It's a public safety issue until they've secured the frontage.
@cstross makes sense, there was a rather large area round it cordoned off. Further than you'd think falling masonry might bounce if it collapsed.
If it's any similar the end of Gordon Street in Glasgow where the fire was at the beginning of March was still closed off when I was there on Wednesday, but that's much less disruptive than Princes Street.
@cstross I lived in Edinburgh while they were building the trams and fondly remember the amount of council tax I paid for buses that can only do one route.I think it was about 10% of my minimum wage for 3 years.
